General Info

The Caracol Mayan Site is the largest known Maya center in Belize. Together with massive temples to climb from and admire miles of protected Chiquibul forest.  As a bonus you can often see archaeologists at work here as the restoration continues.

The name Caracol is Spanish for “snail shell” and was given because of the inordinate numbers of snail shells found there.

Caracol Mayan Site remains one of the more difficult ruins in Belize to access. With a significant portion of the road paved. Getting there gives visitors the chance to travel on one of the more scenic roads in Belize.

Situated at 1600 feet above sea level (one of the highest located sites of the southern uplands region) with no natural water body close by, it remains a mystery why such a huge population centre like Caracol evolved where it is. However, the close proximity to both extremely hard stone and copal, two commodities highly prized by the Mayas may help explain this enigma.

Your guide will explains its history as he walks you through historical pictures and findings at the on-site museum. Thereafter, it’s off to explore the ancient temples!

Try to contain your excitement and listen to your guide while he explains the various structures’ purposes and the stories in the several stalae. Feel free to climb to the very top of Caana, the tallest temple. You’ll certainly be awestruck!

After Exploring Caracol Mayan Site. The tour will head back to Mountain Pine Ridge for a refreshing dip at the Rio On Pools.
